New Delhi, June 15 (IANS). Taking a major step towards strengthening the security, Indian Railways has approved the installation of ‘Kavach System’ on the remaining 811 km broad gauge section of Ambala Division of Northern Railway. An investment of Rs 201 crore will be made on this project.

This work will be carried out on several important railway routes of Ambala division, including Ambala Cantt-Ludhiana, Kalka-Chandigarh-New Morinda-Sahnewal, Sirhind-Daulatpur Chowk, Rajpura-Bathinda-Sriganganagar and Ludhiana-Dhuri-Jakhal sections.

These railway routes are important rail corridors connecting Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. These carry a large amount of passenger and freight traffic and are extremely important for the movement of people and goods in the region.

This work has been sanctioned as part of the broader program of Railways in which ‘Kavach’ system with LTE based communication backbone is being deployed on the remaining routes.

‘Kavach’ is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection System, designed to enhance the safety of railway operations. This system prevents signal crossing in case of danger, applies brakes automatically when needed, controls the speed of the train and significantly reduces the risk of accidents.

Indian Railways is expanding the ‘Kavach’ system across its network in a phased manner to enhance safety, reliability and capacity on high density and strategically important routes.

Railways has approved several projects totaling Rs 1,364.45 crore aimed at strengthening safety, signaling and communication systems. These include installation of armor in locomotives, expansion of optical fiber network and conversion of panel interlocking system to electronic interlocking in various zones.

Earlier, three separate projects worth Rs 400.86 crore were approved to strengthen the communication system in Northern Railway. All these works are part of a larger programme, which has been approved at a cost of Rs 4,871 crore.

Apart from this, a sub-provision of Rs 871 crore has also been given to Northern Railway, under which fiber cable will be laid in 926.05 route kilometers in Ambala division. Optical fiber network will be built on 1,204 route kilometers in Delhi division and OFC rooms will be built at stations. This work will be done in 1,074 route kilometers in Lucknow division.

The objective of all these projects is to improve and strengthen the communication system of the Railways, which is essential for modern signaling and ‘Kavach’ system.
