New Delhi, June 15 (IANS). Indian Railways has approved the installation of Kavach version 4.0 on 598 km route spread over 48 block sections of Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway, Gujarat as part of security enhanced measures. This project has been approved at a cost of Rs 140 crore.
Earlier, ‘Kavach’ work on 702 km route of Ahmedabad division had already been approved. With the approval of the present project, the remaining sections of the division will also be brought under the ambit of Kavach, paving the way for wider deployment of the indigenous train protection system across the entire division.
This work has been sanctioned under the comprehensive program to provide the remaining routes of Indian Railways with Long Term Evolution (LTE) based communication backbone.
‘Kavach’ is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, designed to enhance operational safety. It helps prevent signal crossing at danger (SPAD), apply brakes automatically when required to avoid unsafe situations, control train speed in critical situations and significantly reduce the risk of collisions.
Indian Railways is expanding Kavach across its network as part of its continued efforts to strengthen security and modernize train operations.
Recently sanctioned projects include provision for installation of on-board armor equipment in 232 locomotives of Southern Railway at a cost of Rs 208.81 crore. The proposal is part of a broader work to arm the remaining routes of Indian Railways with LTE communication backbone at a total cost of Rs 27,693 crore.
Under this programme, a sub-allocation of Rs 2,950 crore has been earmarked for Southern Railways. The present work is proposed under this sub-allocation and involves installation of ‘Kavach’ version 4.0 equipment on the locomotive.
Similarly, Indian Railways has approved providing Optic Fiber Cable at a cost of Rs 176.7699 crore to support the implementation of ‘Kavach’ system on North Central Railway and to improve communication infrastructure on high density routes.
