New Delhi, September 13 (IANS) A study claims that prosthetic sweetness or prolonged use of low -calorie sweet use, mainly used by diabetics, can cause cognitive decline.
Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, analyzed 12,000 patients who use common artificial sweeteners such as Aspartem, Saikreen, Zelitol, Erythritol, Sorbitol, Tagatos and Essalfame.
The results published in the Journal of Neurology found that people who consumed a large amount of sugar, their thinking and memory declined by about 62 percent, while those who consumed in small amounts were not seen.
Dr. Manjari Tripathi, head of the Department of Neurology at AIIMS, told IANS, “We know that the options of sugar and sugar increase the risk of diabetes and deadly diseases. They are also associated with the dysfunction of the vascular cells of the brain.” He advised to limit its use.
The study has shown that people who consumed normal amount of artificial sweetness, their memory and thinking ability declined by 35 percent, and oral flow declined by 110 percent.
In the groups that consuming more, memory and thinking ability declined by 62 percent, and oral flow declined by 173 percent.
Dr. Anshu Rohatgi, vice -president of the neurology department of a hospital in the city, said that the most commonly seen in diabetics is a matter of concern.
Rohatgi said that the brain can become more sensitive by the frequent exposure to these options.
Rohatgi told IANS, “These artificial sweeteners can cause nerve-inflammatory, and this may be a cause of cognitive decline. The second reason may be that it is changing microbiom of the intestine.”
A study conducted by Chennai-based Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) in 2024 has shown that using a small amount of natural and artificial non-nutrient sweetener (NNS) instead of table sugar (Sucrose) in daily beverages like coffee and tea can not have any adverse effects on glucose or HBA1 C levels.
The study published in the diabetes therapy magazine has shown that people who used Sucralose as pellets (cakes), liquid or powder, their body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) also improved slightly.
In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) expressed concern over the use of NNS among the healthcare stakeholders and the general public.
