New Delhi, March 10 (IANS). According to information received on Tuesday, Peter Elbers, CEO of the country’s largest airline IndiGo, has resigned from his post. According to InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the company that operates IndiGo, this decision has been taken a few months after the airline’s biggest flight crisis in December last year.
In the information given to the stock exchange, the company said that Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation, will take over the responsibility of managing the airline on an interim basis.
The airline said in its statement that Peter Albers is stepping down from the post of CEO of IndiGo with immediate effect. The Board of Directors of the company thanked him for his contribution and services to the organization and wished him all the best for his future.
The company also said that Rahul Bhatia will take charge of the functioning of the airline until the company announces new leadership. It is expected that the new CEO will be announced soon.
Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of the Board, said that Rahul Bhatia’s re-assignment to the management will be an important step towards strengthening the company’s work culture, maintaining excellence in operations and providing better service to customers.
Rahul Bhatia said that he had founded IndiGo 22 years ago and taken it forward, hence he has a personal responsibility towards the airline, the country, customers, employees and investors.
During the tenure of Peter Albers, who became the CEO of IndiGo about three years ago, the airline expanded rapidly. Under his leadership, the company’s revenues exceeded $10 billion and the airline’s fleet grew to more than 440 aircraft.
Meanwhile, IndiGo also placed a historic order for 500 aircraft of the A320 family with Airbus, which is considered one of the largest orders in aviation history.
Despite these achievements, however, a major operational crisis in December 2025 marred his tenure. The crisis arose when airlines faced difficulties in implementing new rules designed to prevent pilot fatigue.
Between December 3 and 5, IndiGo canceled more than 2,500 flights, while around 1,900 were delayed. Due to this, more than 3 lakh passengers across the country had to face problems.
