CERT-In, the cyber security agency of the Government of India, has issued a big alert for Google Chrome users. The agency has identified several serious security vulnerabilities in the Chrome browser, which can be exploited by hackers to attack users’ systems. This may lead to situations like device crash or interruption in service (Denial of Service). This threat can affect desktop users on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Versions of Google Chrome older than 148.0.7778.178 on Linux, and older than 148.0.7778.178 or 179 on Windows and Mac are vulnerable to these vulnerabilities. The government has advised all users to update their Google Chrome browser immediately. According to the agency, if not updated on time, hackers can steal sensitive data or damage the device.
Security flaws found in Google Chrome
CERT-In, the cyber security agency working under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India, has said in its latest advisory that several dangerous security flaws have been found in the desktop version of Google Chrome. This issue can affect systems running Windows, Mac, and Linux. According to the agency, by taking advantage of these vulnerabilities, a remote attacker could run arbitrary code on the system, break security restrictions and steal sensitive information. Additionally, these security flaws may crash the device or cause a denial of service. Considering this a serious threat, the government has urged users to update their browsers immediately.
According to reports, versions of Google Chrome older than 148.0.7778.178 on Linux, and versions older than 148.0.7778.178 or 179 on Windows and Mac have been found to be vulnerable to this threat. Researchers believe that these security vulnerabilities exist in WebRTC, GPU, QUIC, XR, and other parts of the browser. Hackers can attack users by tricking them into taking them to a dangerous website or clicking on a fake link. As soon as a user opens such a link, an attacker can insert malware into the system or steal data. This is why cyber security agencies constantly advise users to keep their browsers updated.
Update Google Chrome immediately
CERT-In has clearly stated that everyone – from ordinary users to big companies – is vulnerable to this threat. The good news is that Google has released a new security update to fix these vulnerabilities. Users are advised to update their Google Chrome browser immediately. To do this, simply open the browser, go to ‘Settings’ and then go to the ‘About Chrome’ section. There, the browser will automatically check for new updates and install the latest version. It will be necessary to restart the browser after the update is complete. Cybersecurity experts emphasize that the easiest and strongest way to ensure online security is through regular updates.
