New Delhi, October 25 (IANS). Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Saturday approved the plan to convert Delhi into an international aviation hub and said that the central government aims to build about 350 airports by 2047.
Union Minister Naidu on Saturday inaugurated the renovated Terminal 2 (T2) of Delhi Airport. The renovated Terminal 2 (T2) is going to open for passengers from Sunday. T2 was built by the Airport Authority of India about 40 years ago, while this terminal was closed since April this year due to renovation work. The terminal has an annual capacity to handle 1.5 crore passengers.
Giving information, he said that currently 164 airports are in operation in India and the government aims to add 200 new airports. However, he said that bringing more and more aircraft into the country is a big challenge.
Union Minister Naidu said in a special conversation with NDTV Profit that Delhi Airport has a target of 120 million capacity. The expansion of T2 alone is expected to add 15 million seats of additional capacity.
Emphasizing the passenger-centric focus of the government’s efforts, he said, “We are keeping passengers at the forefront of everything we do, with our aim being to improve standards to meet global aviation standards.”
Union Minister Naidu also emphasized on the expertise of the Central Government in creating aviation infrastructure. He said, we have built so many airports in the last 10 years that now we have become experts in it.
Meanwhile, Delhi Airport also gave information about Terminal 2 being back in operation in a post on social media platform X.
“Future Ready Terminal 2 is back in action,” read a post from Delhi Airport.
