New Delhi, November 9 (IANS). The Central Government has earned about Rs 800 crore by selling scrap from various ministries and departments under the cleanliness campaign. Besides, this has also freed up about 232 lakh square feet of office space.

According to officials, in this cleanliness drive which lasted for about a month (2 to 31 October), a record 232 lakh square feet of office space has been freed, while about 29 lakh physical files have been removed.

The cleanliness campaign in government offices was started in 2021. Since then the government has earned about Rs 4,100 crore by selling scrap and out-of-use assets.

According to reports, around 11.58 lakh office sites have been covered under the campaign and it was coordinated by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DAR&PG).

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for cleanliness and good governance, the annual cleanliness and efficiency campaign has now become a cornerstone of administrative reform.

Officials said that three Union ministers – Mansukh Mandaviya, K. Ram Mohan Naidu and Dr Jitendra Singh – supervised this massive inter-ministerial effort, in which 84 ministries and departments, including India’s missions abroad, participated.

Last month, speaking at the “Special Sanitation Campaign 5.0” at Nehru Park in the national capital during the launch of the campaign, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said the campaign has brought visible changes in governance and public services.

The government has earned Rs 3,296.71 crore from the sale of e-waste and scrap, while more than 696.27 lakh square feet of office space has been cleaned and put to use in the last four years.

He said that during the previous phases of the campaign, more than 137.86 lakh old files have been deleted and more than 12.04 lakh places have been cleaned across the country.
