New Delhi, June 15 (IANS). Commercial flights officially started at Noida International Airport in Uttar Pradesh from Monday, June 15, giving a significant boost to air connectivity in Northern India. Low-cost airline IndiGo has created history by becoming the first airline to start flight operations from Noida International Airport (NIA), Jewar.
According to the airline, the first flight arrived at Noida International Airport from Lucknow, while the first flight departed for Bengaluru shortly thereafter.
IndiGo will now connect this new airport directly to more than 16 destinations across the country.
Along with this, one-stop connectivity will also be available between 14 cities like Amritsar-Jodhpur, Bareilly-Bhopal, Jaipur and Jodhpur, Dharamshala-Jodhpur, Chandigarh-Bareilly, Kishangarh and Pantnagar, Jammu-Jodhpur, Jaipur-Dharamshala and Pantnagar, Kishangarh-Bhopal and Pantnagar-Jaipur and Jodhpur.
These connections will provide better air connectivity to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities with major metros, making air travel more convenient for passengers.
Alok Singh, Chief Strategy Officer, IndiGo, said, “The opening of Noida International Airport is a new chapter in India’s aviation story. Delhi-NCR now joins the few major metros in the world where more than one airport is serving.”
Strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway, Noida International Airport is being developed as an important aviation and logistics hub for the region, which will further strengthen the existing air capacity.
Christoph Schnellmann, Vice Chairman, Noida International Airport, said, “Welcoming IndiGo’s first flights marks the beginning of a new chapter for us. As a launch carrier, IndiGo will connect NIA with key cities in India from day one, providing passengers with more choice and convenience.”
He said, “We are excited to work together with IndiGo to provide a seamless travel experience to passengers and promote the growth of aviation, trade and tourism in the region.”
According to officials, the first phase of the airport has been completed and it has a capacity to handle around 1.2 crore passengers annually.
The airport’s operational infrastructure consists of one runway, integrated terminal building and air traffic control tower.
