New Delhi, October 16 (IANS). The demand for skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is continuously increasing in India. According to a report on Thursday, AI was mentioned in the job descriptions of 11.7 percent of Indian jobs in September, which was limited to 10.6 percent of job descriptions three months ago and 8.2 percent of jobs a year ago.

AI opportunities are concentrated in the tech sector, but their scope is also expanding rapidly. Nearly 39 percent of data and analytics roles mention AI, which is more than 23 percent of software development, 18 percent of insurance, and 17 percent of scientific research.

“The demand for AI skills is similar across multiple engineering categories, with industrial engineering leading the demand at 17 percent, followed by mechanical engineering at 11 percent and electrical engineering at 9.2 percent,” the Indeed Hiring Lab report said.

According to the report, despite an increase in postings related to AI skills, Indian job postings on Indeed declined 0.8 percent this month, the sixth monthly decline this year and 16.2 percent less than a year ago.

Indian job postings are 69 percent higher than pre-pandemic levels, but down 22 percent from their peak in January 2023.

“India ranked higher than other Indeed markets. Apart from India, only Singapore had a higher share of postings mentioning AI. It is clear that many employers across India have become increasingly reliant on AI,” said Calum Pickering, senior economist (Asia-Pacific) at Indeed.

Every month, the Indian workforce is slowly moving towards more formal work arrangements. As the country transforms, job creation in the formal sector will outpace overall employment growth across the country.

The report says that due to this change, the posting of jobs in India has been higher compared to other Indeed markets.

The report said that as AI is reshaping hiring priorities, the demand for expert and high-skilled professionals is also increasing. Many employers are looking for candidates skilled in AI-related tools like data analytics and automation.
