WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption feature is under scrutiny. A new lawsuit has been filed in the US against the instant messaging platform Meta, alleging that the company can read users’ private chats. This lawsuit against WhatsApp has been filed by an international group, which is raising questions on WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. Elon Musk has also reacted to this and said that WhatsApp is not secure. Signal app is also facing similar questions.

According to a Bloomberg report, the International Group of Plaintiffs claims that Meta reads the chats of millions of WhatsApp users every day. The company’s claim of end-to-end encryption is false. Will Cathcart, Global Head of WhatsApp, responded to this allegation saying that it is completely baseless. WhatsApp cannot read users’ messages because the encryption keys are stored on the user’s phone, and Meta does not have access to them. This is the same firm which has made baseless allegations earlier also. Let us understand this allegation against WhatsApp in these 5 points…

Are WhatsApp’s privacy claims false?
This lawsuit against WhatsApp has been filed in the US District Court of San Francisco, alleging that the company is misleading users with its encryption feature. It claims that Meta illegally stores users’ chats and analyzes conversations to use the information for targeted advertising.

Questions were raised in many countries including India
Questions have been raised on the encryption feature of WhatsApp in many countries including India. Apart from India, plaintiff groups in Australia, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa have called WhatsApp’s encryption claims hollow.

Will there be any action against WhatsApp?
There is very little possibility of action against WhatsApp in this case, because in such cases the courts require concrete evidence. It is difficult for the plaintiff group to gather evidence for such allegations. In such a situation, it may take a very long time to prove the allegations.

Elon Musk also raised questions
Elon Musk has also reacted to these allegations against WhatsApp. Musk called WhatsApp unsafe. He also questioned Signal’s end-to-end encryption.

Meta says allegations are baseless
The global head of WhatsApp has called these allegations baseless. Meta is preparing to file a lawsuit against the lawyers who sued WhatsApp. The company is taking legal advice for this. Company spokesperson Andy Stone has called these allegations against WhatsApp false.
