New Delhi, 18 September (IANS). A survey report on gender pay-gap (gender pay inequality) in India has revealed shocking figures. About half of the job seekers (45 percent) believe that the salary difference between women and men in the country is more than 20 percent. The main reason behind this is the career break related to maternity leave and bias at the workplace.

In this survey conducted by job portal jobs in 80 industries, 51 percent of professionals said that maternity leave is the biggest reason in women’s career, which increases pay ineffectiveness. At the same time, 27 percent considered the attitude and prejudice towards women at the workplace as important reason.

The perception was the most prevalent in IT (56 percent), pharma (55 percent) and automobile (53 percent) sector. In particular, professionals with 5 to 10 years (54 percent) and 10 to 15 years (53 percent) experiences explained the effect of career brake the most.

According to the survey, more than half of the professionals considered IT to be the largest gender pay-gap industry. At the same time, inequality was the highest perception in Aviation (57 percent) and education (52 percent), while sectors such as real estate (21 percent), FMCG (18 percent) and banking (12 percent) were considered relatively better. The picture was found more positive in traditional industries like oil and gas and retail.

The IT sector was also held most guilty among the young professionals, freshers and mid-level employees. Technology hubs such as Hyderabad (59 percent) and Bangalore (58 percent), especially, recorded the most concern about salary inequality.

This notion was stronger even among experienced professionals. 46 percent of experience with 10 to 15 years of experience and 47 percent professionals with more than 15 years of experience said that gender pay-gap is more than 20 percent.

Most professionals believe that performance -based promotion can remove this inequality.
