Google has recently issued a serious warning to smartphone users around the world, raising concerns among Android phone users. According to the company, millions of users may be vulnerable to dangerous malware and spyware attacks. If immediate precautions are not taken, personal data, photos, videos and other sensitive information may fall into the hands of cyber criminals.

The main reason for this warning is the use of old Android operating system. Reports suggest that smartphones running Android 13 or older are most at risk. A large number of people around the world still use such devices. It is estimated that about 40 percent of smartphones are still running on the old Android system, the total number of which is about one billion. These devices no longer receive regular security updates, making it very easy for hackers to hack them.

Talking about Android version, the latest Android 16 has reached only a few users. Android 15 is also running on a limited number of phones. In contrast, Android 14 and Android 13 are still in widespread use. Overall, just over half of all smartphones can currently be considered secure, with the remaining devices potentially at risk.

In this situation, the most important step for users is to update their phone’s operating system immediately. If your smartphone is running on an old Android version and is no longer getting updates, then it can become an easy target for hackers. There is a danger of personal information stored in such phones being stolen and used for scam, blackmail or other major frauds.

Smartphone companies usually provide security updates for a limited period of time. Most brands provide update support for four to five years, after which replacing the phone becomes the safest option. However, some premium companies like Samsung and Google are now promising up to seven years of security updates for their new flagship phones. In contrast, this support for mid-range and budget smartphones is usually limited to three to four years. In this situation, if you want to keep your data and privacy safe, ignoring your old phone can prove costly. Regular software updates or upgrading to a new smartphone when needed are the most reliable ways to protect yourself from this growing cyber threat.
