New Delhi, May 24 (IANS). With a view to improve efficiency and promote increased use of clean fuel, the central government on Sunday said it has amended the ‘Legal Metrology (Government Approved Testing Centres) Rules, 2013’. It aims to further strengthen India’s legal metrology ecosystem and expand the weights and measures verification infrastructure in the country.

A key feature of this amendment is that it has expanded the scope of Government-Approved Testing Centers (GATC) to also include verification and re-verification of additional fuel delivery systems. It is expected that this move will increase the availability of verification services.

Under these amendments, state governments have been empowered to notify additional categories of weights and measures for verification through GATC as per their respective rules.

The fee for verification of petrol and diesel dispensers has been fixed at Rs 5,000 per nozzle, while for CNG, LPG, LNG and hydrogen dispensers the fee has been fixed at Rs 10,000 per nozzle.

Under the amended rules, five categories of dispensing systems have been added to the list of equipment that can be verified by GATC. These include petrol/diesel dispenser, CNG dispenser, LPG dispenser, LNG dispenser and hydrogen dispenser.

With the inclusion of these devices, GATC will now be able to verify and re-verify a total of 23 categories of weights and measures under the ‘Legal Metrology’ framework, the Department of Consumer Affairs said in a statement.

GATCs are approved facilities that have the necessary infrastructure and technical expertise to undertake verification and reverification of weights and measures as prescribed under the ‘Legal Metrology Act’ and its related rules.

By involving qualified private laboratories and industries, the GATC framework helps to expand country verification capacity and improve access to verification services.
