New Delhi, June 27 (IANS). India is fast emerging as a global leader in the field of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Building on citizen-centric digital governance platforms and a largely developed digital ecosystem, India has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 24 countries for cooperation on the India Stack and DPI system by February 2026. These include areas like digital identity, digital payments, data exchange and service delivery.
Over the past 11 years, India has built one of the world’s largest digital public infrastructure ecosystems, according to an official factsheet released on Saturday. Access to health, education, skill development, agriculture and welfare schemes through digital platforms has massively increased, especially to rural and deprived areas.
The fact sheet said India has also emerged as a global leader in the areas of digital payments and digital governance innovation. With the expansion of India Stack across multiple countries, ‘Digital India’ is strengthening India’s global role through citizen-centric, inclusive and technology-led development models.
According to this, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now operational in more than eight countries including UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius and Sri Lanka, strengthening India’s presence in the global fintech sector.
The factsheet said Indian digital platforms like Aadhaar, DigiLocker, CoWin, Government e-Marketplace (GeM), Diksha, Umang and e-Sanjeevani are now being adopted as models of digital governance in many countries of the world.
India also launched ‘India Stack Global’ and ‘Global DPI Repository’ during its presidency of the G20 in 2023, further enhancing the global reach of Indian digital solutions.
According to the official factsheet, the ‘Digital India Programme’ will complete 11 years on July 1, 2026. The program was built around nine key pillars to expand digital reach and spur innovation.
The fact sheet states that India has now become the world’s leading country in the field of real-time digital payments. India accounts for about 49 percent of total real-time digital payment transactions globally through UPI.
Moreover, the contribution of the country’s digital economy to the gross domestic product (GDP) has reached about 12 to 14 percent, which is expected to increase to about 20 percent in the next decade.
The factsheet said the Digital India campaign has accelerated innovation, startup ecosystem and use of technology in various sectors. India’s capabilities in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and cyber security have also been strengthened.
The government says that the Digital India program is continuously giving impetus to inclusive growth, technological self-reliance and citizen empowerment towards the goal of ‘Developed India 2047’.
