New Delhi, July 18 (IANS). India and Finland have agreed to further strengthen economic ties and the possibility of doubling bilateral trade between the two countries by 2030 through the proposed EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), according to a new report.
Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Rikka Purra and India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met in Helsinki and discussed ways to diversify and strengthen economic ties between the two countries, Daily Finland reported.
After the meeting, Rikka Purra said, “The strategic partnership between the two countries in the field of digitalization and sustainability and the free trade agreement between the EU and India will enable us to double bilateral trade by the year 2030.”
Purra said Finland’s expertise in the field of digital and sustainable technology solutions is in line with India’s development journey and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“I hope that as reliable partners, we will deepen our cooperation in space, defense and other important technology areas,” he said.
Piyush Goyal posted on Twitter, “We discussed strengthening economic and financial cooperation, enhancing trade and investment ties and expanding partnership in digitalization and emerging sectors.”
Finland’s Economic Affairs Minister Sakari Puisto also met Piyush Goyal. He said that the visit of the Indian Minister to Finland shows that both the countries have keen interest in cooperation in many important areas related to India’s development plans and the implementation of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement.
He said the sheer size of the Indian market offers immense opportunities for Finnish companies in both traditional and new sectors, as well as new opportunities for cooperation with Indian companies.
Piyush Goyal said that in his meeting with Sakari Puisto, there was discussion on increasing cooperation in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), 6G, Quantum Technology, Semiconductor, Space and Sustainability.
Apart from this, Piyush Goyal also held several high-level meetings with senior executives of leading technology and industrial companies of Finland in Helsinki on Friday. During this, he urged companies to expand manufacturing, research and development (R&D) capabilities in India and increase investments to increase exports from India.
