There has been an increase in mobile attacks through malware and other means across the world, and India is at the forefront. A recent report revealed that 26 percent of all mobile attacks occurring worldwide occur in India alone. When it comes to cyberattacks targeting IoT (Internet of Things), the United States leads the way, accounting for more than half of all such attacks worldwide. The report also revealed that incidents of malware and spyware targeting mobile phones have increased by 67 percent year-on-year.
There have been 38 percent more attacks in India compared to last year – report
According to Zscaler’s ThreatLabz 2025 Mobile, IoT and OT Threat Report, mobile attacks in India have increased by 38 percent year-on-year, making India the country with the highest number of mobile attacks in the world. Cyber criminals are now committing fraud using mobile payments instead of card payments. The report also says that cyber attackers are targeting the energy sector the most. Cyber attacks in this region have increased by 387 percent compared to last year. Cyber attacks have also increased rapidly in the manufacturing and transportation sectors.
Fake apps downloaded millions of times
According to the report, more than 200 malicious apps were found on Google Play Store, which had more than 4.2 crore downloads. These apps, which claimed to be productivity and workflow utility apps, were listed in the Tools category. These apps were downloaded millions of times around the world. Despite Google’s efforts to prevent fake apps from being listed on the Play Store, cyber criminals still manage to list them. These apps are designed to steal user data and install malware or ransomware.
