New Delhi, December 8 (IANS). India is making significant expansion regarding clean energy. Recently, while giving information at an event, Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Prahlad Joshi said that the country has recorded its highest ever non-fossil capacity addition of 31.25 GW in the current financial year, which includes 24.28 GW of solar capacity.
According to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, after taking almost 70 years to reach 1 terawatt renewable energy capacity in 2022, the world has achieved 2 terawatt renewable energy capacity by 2024, which shows that 1 additional terawatt capacity has been added in just two years. At the same time, India is a key driver of this rapid global boom in renewable energy.
In the last 11 years, the country’s solar capacity has increased from 2.8 GW to about 130 GW, an increase of more than 4500 percent. India alone is expected to contribute 46 GW to global solar energy growth between 2022 and 2024, becoming the third largest contributor.
At the recently held Global Energy Leaders Summit 2025 in Puri, Odisha, the Union Minister announced 1.5 lakh rooftop solar utility-led aggregation models under PM Surya Ghar for Odisha, aimed at benefiting and empowering 7–8 lakh people across the state.
The Union Minister said that Odisha is already showing strong performance in adopting clean energy. With over 3.1 GW of installed renewable energy capacity, clean energy now accounts for over 34 per cent of the state’s total installed power capacity.
Additionally, under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Griha Yojana, 1.6 lakh families have applied for rooftop solar, over 23,000 installations have been completed and over 19,200 families have received subsidies worth over Rs 147 crore directly into their bank accounts.
