New Delhi, March 7 (IANS). India and the United Kingdom held a conference in Delhi, aimed at strengthening cooperation on safety standards and regulatory framework for green hydrogen. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on Saturday said that green hydrogen is an emerging clean energy source, which India is actively promoting under its National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The event was attended by representatives from government, industry, academia, standard setting bodies, testing institutes, research organizations and regulatory agencies from India and the United Kingdom.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy informed that the main objective of the conference was to strengthen cooperation for safe use of green hydrogen technologies under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The safety framework, international standards and regulatory processes associated with the entire value chain of green hydrogen – production, storage, transportation and end-use – were considered during the discussion.

The conference was organized by the National Center for Hydrogen Safety, which functions under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. It was organized in collaboration with the British Embassy and the World Resources Institute.

The inaugural session started with the address of Mohammad Rihan, Director General of National Institute of Solar Energy.

Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary, Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, said that implementing green hydrogen technologies on a large scale requires strong safety frameworks, clear standards and global cooperation.

The conference was also attended by representatives of key regulatory institutions involved in hydrogen safety and standards in India.

Officials from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization discussed regulatory approaches related to safety compliance, risk assessment and hazard management in hydrogen systems.

The Bureau of Indian Standards shared information about the development of hydrogen standards and bringing them in line with global best practices.

Experts from industry, research institutes and academia gave presentations in the technical sessions of the conference. Topics like safe design and operation of hydrogen production plants, storage and transportation systems and end-use safety were discussed.

Experts also shared views on risk assessment methods, lessons learned from past incidents and use of emerging technologies such as advanced sensors and artificial intelligence based monitoring systems to further strengthen hydrogen safety.
