New Delhi, October 28 (IANS). President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday said India not only wants to meet its clean energy targets by 2050 but also become a hub that integrates global solar demand and promotes innovation, manufacturing and knowledge exchange.
Addressing the eighth session of the Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, President Murmu said India is on its way to becoming a global solar energy hub.
He highlighted the country’s progress in achieving renewable energy targets ahead of schedule and outlined a vision to integrate global solar demand and promote clean energy innovation.
The President said that ISA symbolizes humanity’s shared aspiration for inclusivity, respect and harnessing solar energy as a source of collective prosperity.
The President urged all member countries to think beyond infrastructure and focus on people’s lives. She said the Assembly should develop a collective action plan that links solar energy with job creation, women leadership, rural livelihoods and digital inclusion.
The President said, “Our progress must be measured not just in megawatts, but also in the transformation of illuminated lives, strengthened families and communities. The focus must also be on technology development and sharing of latest and advanced technologies with all for maximum benefits.”
The President said that climate change is affecting the entire world. Immediate and concrete steps need to be taken to deal with this threat. India is committed to tackling climate change and is taking determined steps.
He further said that ISA is an important step towards addressing this global challenge by encouraging the adoption and use of solar energy.
Speaking at the event, Pralhad Joshi, Minister of Consumer Affairs and New and Renewable Energy, spoke about India’s renewable energy journey.
He further said that renewable energy production in the country has increased to 257 GW, which was earlier 81 GW in 2014.
“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has achieved the target of achieving 50 per cent energy capacity from non-fossil sources, 5 years ahead of the 2030 target, making clean energy accessible and affordable,” the Union Minister said in the address.
Joshi further said that through transformative initiatives like PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, PM-Janman and ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’, India is leading efforts to ensure energy justice, empower the poorest and strengthen South-South cooperation.
