India’s total crude steel production capacity is expected to reach around 220 MTPA in FY 2025-26, putting the industry on track to achieve the National Steel Policy’s target of 300 MTPA tonnes per annum by 2030.

SAIL has approved increasing the crude steel production capacity of its Bhilai Steel Plant from the present 6.8 MTPA to 10.2 MTPA.

Additionally, JSW Steel commenced construction of its integrated steel plant at Paradip, Odisha in May 2026 – a phased development project with a planned capacity of 13.2 MTPA.

Under the ‘Green Steel Initiative’, Green Steel Certificates were issued to 94 producers from 15 states (by May 31, 2026), with most of the certified products achieving the highest 5-star rating – reflecting the strong acceptance of the initiative among secondary and medium-sized steel producers.
