Today, WhatsApp has become an essential part of our everyday lives. Chatting, sharing photos and videos, or making calls – it’s all done through this app. However, sometimes people do something without thinking which is considered a crime in the eyes of the law. If you do something like this even by mistake, you can go to jail. Therefore, it is important to understand what you should not do on WhatsApp.

Spreading fake news and rumors can be a serious crime
Forwarding messages on WhatsApp is common, but if the message contains rumors, hate speech, or misinformation, it can lead to trouble. In India, spreading fake news is a punishable offense under various sections of the IT Act and IPC. If your forwarded message hurts someone’s sentiments, incites riots, or harms someone’s reputation, the police can take action against you. In many cases, people have been arrested just for forwarding a message.

It is also legally wrong to send objectionable photos and videos
Some people send obscene, offensive, or sensitive photos and videos on WhatsApp in the name of fun. But this comes under the category of cyber crime. Sending private content without permission, sharing photos or videos with the intent to harm someone’s reputation, or spreading obscene material are all serious crimes. Under Section 67 of the IT Act, this can result in both jail and heavy fine.

You can go to jail for sending threatening messages
If someone uses WhatsApp to intimidate, threaten, or blackmail someone, it is punishable under several sections of the IPC. Sometimes people send such messages in anger or in a hurry, but its consequences can be very serious. Any threatening, violent, or defamatory message can directly lead to a police case.

What things to keep in mind?
If you use WhatsApp, remember that every message, photo, or video is digital evidence. A small mistake can turn your life upside down. Always think carefully before sending messages, stay away from unknown links or suspicious content, and always verify the authenticity of any sensitive information before sharing it further.
