New Delhi, October 22 (IANS). More than a third of Indian employees working at major technology companies such as Zoho, Apple and Nvidia are graduates from Tier 3 colleges in the country. This information was given in a report on Wednesday.

The report, based on a survey of 1,602 Indian professionals by Blind, an anonymous social media app, said this reflects a growing shift towards skill-based hiring.

In this survey, based on NIRF 2025 ranking, colleges have been classified into Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and foreign institutions.

“Traditional financial firms still value college names, while major technology companies prioritize skills. Many respondents working at companies such as Zoho, Apple, Nvidia, SAP and PayPal said their careers were not impacted by the college name. An average of 34 percent of employees surveyed were Tier 3 graduates,” the report said.

Traditional financial and tech firms like Goldman Sachs, Visa, Atlassian, Oracle and Google remained dependent on campus recruitment, where an average of 18 per cent of respondents were Tier 3 graduates.

While 59 percent of Tier 3 alumni and 45 percent of foreign graduates considered their college education just a line on their resume, the majority of Tier 1 and Tier 2 alumni credited campus recruitment for their career growth.

About 15 percent of Tier 3 alumni said their education had a significant impact on their salary, while 74 percent said it was helpful only in the initial stages.

About 53 percent of foreign graduates reported that college had little or no impact on their earnings.

Blind said that 41 percent of the professionals surveyed have graduated from Tier 1 colleges like IIT, IISc, top IIMs, BITS Pilani etc. Whereas 30 percent professionals have graduated from Tier 2 colleges, 25 percent from Tier 3 and 4 percent professionals have graduated from foreign institutions.
