New Delhi, February 5 (IANS). State power generating company NTPC is planning to set up 30 gigawatt nuclear power capacity by 2047. This information was given in Parliament on Thursday by Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik.
After receiving all necessary approvals, NTPC has formed a wholly owned nuclear subsidiary named NTPC Nuclear Power Corporation Limited (NPUNL) under the Companies Act.
“NTPC’s target of 30 GW is part of the government’s decision to achieve 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047,” the Union minister said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
The Union Minister further said that Anu Shakti Vidyut Nigam Limited, a joint venture of NTPC and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), is in the process of setting up a 4X700 MW nuclear power project in Banswara district of Rajasthan.
This plant is called Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP). As per current estimates, preliminary testing of the first 700 MW unit of MBRAPP will begin by FY 2032-33.
The Union Minister informed that to explore various options and possibilities of possible collaboration with international partners, NTPC Limited has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI).
NTPC has recorded an addition of 359.58 MW in commercial capacity through various solar projects of its subsidiaries in Gujarat and Rajasthan last month, taking the group’s total commercial capacity to over 85.5 GW.
NTPC contributes to meeting one-fourth of India’s power needs and has an installed capacity of over 85 GW, with an additional capacity of 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity.
The company targets 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, which will strengthen India’s net zero goals.
According to the company, with a diverse portfolio of thermal, hydro, solar and wind power plants, NTPC is focused on providing reliable, affordable and sustainable power to the country.
