Phones, UPI and online banking have undoubtedly made life easier, but they have also opened up new avenues for fraudsters. Today, one missed call, one fake message, or one fake customer care number is enough to drain anyone’s account. The most dangerous thing is that as soon as people realize that they have been cheated, they often panic, and it is this panic that causes the most damage. Within minutes, the money is transferred from multiple accounts and disappears. In such situations, correct information and immediate action can save your years of hard-earned money. The government has started a national helpline to deal with cyber fraud, which comes in handy whenever you become a victim of fraud.
If you are a victim of fraud then call this helpline number immediately.
As soon as you suspect that you have been a victim of cyber fraud, call 1930 without wasting any time. This is the National Cyber Crime Helpline of the Government of India and is operational 24×7. By calling this number, your complaint is registered, and an alert is sent to the concerned bank or payment platform. Its purpose is to freeze the fraudulent amount before further transfer.
Time is of the essence here. Filing a complaint within the first few minutes of a fraud significantly increases your chances of getting your money back. While calling, clearly mention the details of the transaction, mobile number, name of the bank and the method of fraud. You can also register a complaint online on cybercrime.gov.in portal. This will ensure that your case is recorded and further action will be taken quickly.
What precautions should you take to avoid fraud?
Most cyber frauds start this way. Someone posing as a bank officer asks for OTP. Some send links in the name of refund, while others threaten in the name of KYC update. Remember, no bank or government institution asks for OTP, PIN or password over the phone. If someone does this, then understand that he is a fraud.
Do not click on any unknown link, no matter how genuine the message seems. Don’t give anyone remote access to your phone except your bank app. Advertisements on social media offering free gifts and discounts can also be a big scam. Stay away from them too.
