New Delhi, April 12 (IANS). On record patent filing in the country in FY26, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that India’s innovation engine is not going to stop now.
A record 1.43 lakh patents were filed in India in FY26, marking an increase of 30.2 per cent over the previous year.

He said that more than 69 percent of the total patent applications in FY 2026 were domestic.
Goyal said, “India’s innovation engine is unstoppable now! Our number of patent applications increased to a historic high of over 1.43 lakh in FY 2025-26, showing a growth of 30.2 per cent over the previous year.”
According to the data, 1,43,729 patent applications were filed in India in FY 2026, up from 1,10,375 applications in FY 2025. The number of domestic applications stood at 98,771, which is much higher than last year’s 68,201 applications.
Among states, Tamil Nadu topped with 22,995 patent applications, followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The Union Minister mentioned the growing contribution of academic institutions, startups, MSMEs and public research and development bodies. Said that educational institutions alone accounted for 36.5 per cent of the total patent applications, which shows the strong efforts of academia in promoting innovation.
“We are the sixth largest patent applicant in the world, which reflects India’s confidence in being ready to become a global innovation powerhouse,” Goyal said.
India’s global position in the field of innovation has also improved and it now ranks as the sixth largest patent applicant in the world, according to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization.
Patent applications have registered growth for the eighth consecutive year, reflecting the continued momentum in the country’s intellectual property ecosystem.
Over the last five years, India has seen a massive 146 percent increase in patent filing cases, from 58,503 in FY 2021 to 1,43,729 in FY 2026.
