Seoul, June 10 (IANS). Two people have been caught cheating on the TOEIC English language exam in South Korea using AI-enabled glasses. This is reported to be the first case of its kind in the country.

The examination administration said on Wednesday that these two people were caught while giving the examination on May 10 and May 31. Suspicion fell on him when the proctors noticed that he might be wearing AI glasses. After this investigation was done.

The Korea TOEIC Committee said that the test results of both test-takers have been canceled and they have been banned from taking the TOEIC exam for the next 4 years.

AI glasses are devices that contain cameras and microphones and also contain generative AI technology. These glasses can analyze what is visible in front and transmit the information to the user through the lens or the speaker installed inside.

Some new models look so much like normal glasses that they can be difficult to identify.

The committee has said that monitors are being trained to identify such AI glasses. The education department is also considering banning carrying of such devices into examination centres, especially during the annual college entrance examination.

Meanwhile, South Korean company SK Telecom has announced the formation of a joint fund with large telecommunications companies of Japan and Taiwan to invest in new generation AI technologies.

Japan’s NTT and Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom are also included in this partnership. Together they will form a fund of approximately US$500 million, which has been named ‘Catalyte Capital’.

The fund will invest in AI startups in North America, Asia and Europe. This will cover the entire technology chain such as AI chips, cooling systems and AI service applications.

SK Hynix company is also preparing to join it.

The company said the fund will be an opportunity to connect AI, information and communications technology, semiconductor and network technology and help connect East Asia’s technological potential to the global innovation system.
