Chennai, March 15 (IANS). Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) has announced that the first unit of the 2×660 MW Udangudi Supercritical Thermal Power Plant will be commissioned by June.
One of the major power generation projects in the state, the Rs 13,077 crore project has started generating initial power generation of about 400 MW in February. TNPGCL officials said the production capacity will be gradually increased in the coming weeks as part of the final testing process.
According to TNPGCL Managing Director M. Govinda Rao, the company plans to soon increase the generation capacity of the first unit to 660 MW. He said that we will run the plant at its full capacity of 660 MW from next week. Before commercial operations begin, the plant will have to run at full capacity for 72 hours continuously without any interruption, which we will be able to accomplish by June.
The Udangudi project is expected to play an important role in meeting the growing power demand of Tamil Nadu. Especially during the summer months when there is a huge increase in electricity consumption across the state. Govinda Rao said that it was due to the dedicated efforts of the engineers, technical teams and all the personnel involved in the project that it was possible to launch the project ahead of the surge in power demand during the summer season.
Let us tell you that the construction of Udangudi Supercritical Thermal Power Plant started in 2018. The project uses modern supercritical technology, designed to increase efficiency and reduce emissions compared to conventional coal-fired power plants.
The plant also has a dedicated coal jetty to ensure continuous supply of fuel for uninterrupted power generation. Once both units of the plant become operational, the Udangudi project will add 1,320 MW to Tamil Nadu’s installed power capacity, strengthening the state’s energy security and helping meet the growing industrial and domestic demand.
