New Delhi, November 20 (IANS). Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Thursday that India’s approach of common and affordable compute facilities is ensuring democratization of technology.

Giving information at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, he said that India has created a common compute facility of 38,000 GPUs, which is available to all researchers and students at a price of less than $1.

The Union Minister said, “Our PM Modi says that we should democratize technology. We adopted this approach and today researchers and innovators are getting a lot of opportunities.”

Explaining his point, he said that if we look at AI models and large language models, these are three different categories. The first category includes large models, examples of which are chatbots. The second category is of focused models, which are used to provide specific solutions in very specific industries.

Union Minister Vaishnav said, “This space is providing a lot of opportunities for the IT industry, people developing applications, people providing solutions. This is a space which is very important for India. Similarly, the third category is of new research.”

He also highlighted at the event the need for social media platforms to take responsibility for the content being published through them.

The Union Minister said, “Social media platforms should start taking responsibility for what they are publishing so that whatever they publish does not harm the society at large.”

He told that India is adopting techno legal approach regarding this. The example of which he gave was the Data Protection Act.

According to the Union Minister, “In our Data Protection Act, we decided to make a law based on principles.”

Explaining his point, Union Minister Vaishnav said that we know that technology keeps changing rapidly with time. Therefore there cannot be any strict law to stop innovation.

“We believe in a combination of innovation and regulation, where we are more inclined towards innovation so that good things can come to the society,” he said.
