New Delhi, June 17 (IANS). Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said India has emerged as one of the fastest growing clean energy economies in the world in the last 12 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Emphasizing on the government’s ambitious efforts towards green energy and reducing carbon emissions in the industry, he said that the ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission’ is playing an important role in taking the country towards a sustainable and self-reliant energy future.
Speaking at the National Workshop on ‘Strengthening the National Green Hydrogen Mission: Through State Policies, Hubs and Infrastructure’ organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Joshi said India has made significant progress in the adoption of renewable energy and development of green hydrogen.
He said the ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission’, launched in 2023 with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore, is expected to make India a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen.
During the event, the Minister launched the ‘Green Hydrogen Certification Portal of India’ (GHCI) developed by MNRE to facilitate transparent certification and compliance of rules under the ‘Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme’. This portal is expected to increase accountability and create a strong framework for the emerging green hydrogen ecosystem.
Urging states to play a more active role in taking this mission forward, Joshi said six states have already announced specific green hydrogen policies, while seven other states have included hydrogen-related provisions in their industrial and renewable energy policies. Four more states are still finalizing their policy framework.
Highlighting the significant progress made in domestic manufacturing, the Minister said that 15 companies have been given financial incentives to set up domestic electrolyzer manufacturing capacity of 3,000 MW per year. The move is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported supply chains and strengthening local manufacturing capabilities.
In the refinery sector, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) have been awarded contracts for the supply of 30,000 metric tonnes (MTPA) of green hydrogen every year.
