New Delhi, October 10 (IANS). The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced the award of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado for her work promoting democratic rights for the Venezuelan people.

Maria is a resident of Venezuela. In Venezuela, she has been a candidate of the opposition party for the previous presidential elections. She is known as a democratic rights activist.
Jorgen Watne Friednes, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said Maria was praised for being a unifying figure in a political opposition that was once divided. An opposition that demanded free elections and representative government.
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize was much discussed. The main reason for this was American President Donald Trump. In fact, it was in the news due to Trump emerging as the leading contender for this award and aggressively pursuing it.
Many countries like Israel, Russia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Thailand, Armenia and Cambodia had nominated the US President.
It is noteworthy that this year 338 nominations have been received for this prestigious award, which include 94 organizations and 244 people from different fields.
