New Delhi, April 25 (IANS). World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every year on 26 April. This day is celebrated to honor the contributions of inventors, creators and entrepreneurs and to spread awareness among people about the importance of intellectual property.
In the year 2000, the member countries of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) declared 26 April as this day. This date was chosen because the WIPO Convention came into force on 26 April 1970.
Now the question is why is World Intellectual Property Day celebrated? The main objective of this day is to make people around the world aware about intellectual property rights. Intellectual property includes patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs and business formulas. These rights encourage innovation and creativity and provide inventors, artists, designers and businesses with fair profits and protection for their creations.
The day also provides an opportunity to understand how a balanced intellectual property system helps the global art world flourish and promotes technological innovations that drive human progress.
Talking about the theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2026, Intellectual Property and Sports, the World Intellectual Property Organization has declared the theme for the year 2026 as ‘Intellectual Property and Sports: Get Ready, Start, Innovate’. Under this theme, this time special attention will be paid to the role of intellectual property in the sports world. Intellectual property rights play an important role in everything from modern sports equipment, revolutionary technologies, brands and designs to innovations that shape sports culture.
This theme reflects how intellectual property fosters creativity and innovation in the world of sports and inspires and connects people around the world. This day celebrates all the creators, inventors and entrepreneurs whose ideas and passion are making the future of sports better and more exciting.
The main objectives of World Intellectual Property Day are to raise public awareness about intellectual property rights, encourage innovation and creativity, protect the rights of inventors and artists, and make society understand how intellectual property contributes to economic development and cultural progress.
