Controversy continues to make hijab compulsory in schools and colleges in Karnataka. Meanwhile, Congress’s deputy leader in the state assembly UT Khadar has demanded permission for girl students to appear in the examination wearing hijab of the same color as their uniform. While addressing the assembly, Khadar appealed to Higher Education Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan and Primary Education Minister B Nagesh regarding this. He said that girl students should be allowed to take the exam as it is very important for the future of those girls.
Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah also demanded the state government to allow girls to take the exam. At the same time, Primary Education Minister B Nagesh replied that we have to follow the order of the High Court. The BJP MLAs raised questions on the Hijab issue and said that the students should follow and respect the High Court’s decision.
SC refuses to fix date for hearing
Earlier, the Supreme Court on Thursday refused to fix the date for hearing on the petitions challenging the decision of the Karnataka High Court in this matter. Senior advocate Devdutt Kamat had sought listing for hearing on the plea of some girl students challenging the high court’s decision, referring to the examinations to be held in Karnataka from March 28. During the hearing, the Chief Justice said that it has nothing to do with the examination. This is a sensitive matter.
Exams to be held in Karnataka from March 28
Earlier too, the court had refused urgent hearing on the hijab controversy, saying it would be considered after the Holi holidays. The matter was put up for urgent hearing before the Chief Justice on Thursday. During this, Advocate Kamat said that the examinations of the students are going to be held from March 28. In such a situation, if she is not given entry with hijab, then her one year will be wasted.
