The US warned China that if it gave military or financial aid to Russia, it would face dire consequences. The White House said, “During Saturday’s conversation with US President Xi Jinping, US President Joe Biden explained in detail the implications and consequences for China if it were to assist Russia.” Biden held lengthy talks with the Chinese leader to persuade Beijing not to provide aid to Moscow.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said in an interview with CNN that Biden was clear in his conversations with Xi. “The US President took the well-known position that China will face dire consequences if it tries to provide military or financial aid to the Russians,” he said.
He said the conversation lasted two hours and it was exceptionally clear. “We have made our stand clear to China,” he said. “They are in an uncomfortable position,” the ambassador said of Beijing. He warned Moscow that Russia would face more consequences if it used chemical weapons in Ukraine.
