BJP leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said on Saturday that it is necessary for the Congress to be strong for a better democracy. Now Congress leaders have welcomed his statement. Maharashtra Congress leader Sachin Sawant on Monday welcomed Union minister Nitin Gadkari’s alleged remarks that “a strong Congress is important for democracy”.
However, he definitely advised Gadkari to talk to PM Modi. Sawant called upon him to speak to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s attempt to destroy the opposition.
Let us tell you that Gadkari had said in a program organized in Pune on Saturday that a strong Congress is important for democracy and it is his sincere wish that the party becomes strong at the national level.
He had said that democracy operates on two wheels, of which “one wheel is the ruling party while the other wheel is the opposition”. Democracy needs a strong opposition and that’s why I feel from the heart that Congress should be strong at the national level.
Gadkari said that since the Congress is weakening, other regional parties are taking its place. “It is not good for democracy that other regional parties take the place of Congress,” he said.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Sawat expressed concern over the alleged misuse of central investigative agencies in non-BJP ruled states to harass their governments.
“We appreciate the concern raised by Gadkari ji but he should also talk to his leader Modi ji about the BJP, opposition parties and attempts to destroy democracy through central investigative agencies,” he said.
Sawant claimed, “Even the Supreme Court seems helpless. You are using investigative agencies to harass governments of non-BJP parties.
He alleged that this kind of politics is happening for the last eight years which is unprecedented. “It will be in the interest of democracy and the country if he (Gadkari) talks to Modi about the BJP’s mindset of destroying the opposition and turning democracy into a dictatorship,” the Congress leader said.
However, the sentiment expressed by Gadkari is good, he added. Sawant said he was not unaware of how the Modi government was trying to throttle democracy in the country.
He said that Congress is the main opposition party and people will realize that the ideology and ideas of Congress are in the interest of the nation.
