In the last eight days, 13 central leaders of the student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) have resigned from the party over its alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the February elections in Bangladesh.
Apart from the alliance with Jamaat, these leaders have also made several allegations against the NCP, including lack of transparency in the decision-making process and political compromises, web portal ‘The Business Standard’ reported on Saturday.
According to the news, despite the objections, Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman formally announced the alliance with NCP in a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka last week.
Even before the formal announcement of the alliance, 30 central leaders of NCP had submitted a memorandum to party convenor Nahid Islam objecting to the proposed agreement.
The first signatory to the memorandum and NCP joint member-secretary Mushfiq Us Salihin had told reporters at the time that he had sent a memorandum to party convenor Naheed Islam regarding a possible alliance, keeping in mind the accountability of the “July Uprising” and the party’s values.
The report said that since December 25, NCP joint member-secretary and party candidate from Chittagong-16 Mir Arshadul Haq, joint member-secretary Tasneem Jara and joint convenor and candidate from Dhaka-17 seat Tajnuwa Jabeen have resigned.
According to the report, other leaders who resigned include Azad Khan Bhasani, Arif Sohail, Khalid Saifullah, Mushfiq Us Salihin, Khan Mohammad Mursaleen, Farhad Alam Bhuiyan, Al Amin Ahmed Tutul, Asif Mustafa Jamal, Mir Habib Al Manzoor and Wahiduzzaman.
