The recent remarks by Donald Trump’s business advisor Peter Navarro has created a stir in political circles. Navaro questioned India’s oil purchase from Russia and said that “India is just one laundromet of Kremlin” and also alleged that “Brahmins are making profiteering at the cost of the Indian public.”
In an interview to Fox News, he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “great leader” and raised the question of “Why the world’s largest democracy stands with Russia and China.” The leaders of India reacted sharply to this comment by Navaro. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi called it “the result of his anger in old age” and said that it is “shameful and dangerous” to create political arguments by referring to a particular caste.
At the same time, Trinamool Congress leaders Sagarika Ghosh and Saket Gokhale explained that the word “Brahmin” in America is used for rich and influential sections, which was called “Boston Brahmin”. He said that Navaro’s remarks should be understood in American socio-political context instead of looking at India’s ethnic background.
