Russian President Vladimir Putin openly supported India and China in a conversation with reporters after attending a grand military parade held in Beijing. Speaking on increasing American pressure on trade, Putin said that both India and China are economic superpower and cannot be talked about in derogatory tone.
Putin’s statement came at a time when the US government headed by Donald Trump has imposed a huge tariff of 50% on New Delhi, one of which is a reason for India’s trade with Russia.
What did Putin say at the Beijing press conference?
Putin told reporters, “From the point of view of international law, all countries should have equal rights and all should be in the same position.” Pointing to the US, Putin added “countries have seen difficult times in their history, long -term attacks on colonial rule, sovereignty. Now that the colonial era is over, they have to understand that such a tone cannot be used while talking to his partners.”
India’s response to American tariff
The US has recently imposed heavy tariffs on India, partly because India is buying oil from Russia, while Russia is entangled in Ukraine War. The Trump administration has accused India of fueling Russia’s “war machine”.
Trump’s business advisor Peter Navaro made a sharp remark on the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China, “It is a shame that Modi (Chinese President) is standing with Xi Jinping and Putin. We do not understand what he is thinking. We hope that he should be with us, not with Russia, not with Russia.”
India described the American tariff as unfair and said that buying oil from Russia is completely valid, as it has no international restrictions.
