Voting is going to take place in the United Nations Security Council today on an important proposal brought by Bahrain. The main goal of this proposal is to make the movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz safe. This step has been taken in view of the increasing danger on sea routes amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Bahrain currently holds the presidency of the Security Council and has taken this initiative to curb activities that hinder maritime trade.
What changes will come with the implementation of this proposal?
According to Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zaini, the ships are being stopped in violation of international maritime rules. Under the new proposal, member countries will have the right to adopt necessary defensive measures for the safety of ships in Hormuz and its surrounding waters. This will have a direct impact on global trade and oil supply because it is one of the busiest sea routes in the world. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has also described it as very important for regional stability.
Rules changed after objections from Russia and China
To pass this proposal, changes have been made several times. Earlier this draft had talked about military action, but Russia and China strongly opposed it. They feared that this might increase the tension in the area even more. Now in the new draft, permission has been given to take defensive measures only for safety’s sake. If this proposal is passed, countries will be able to take steps individually or together to protect ships. America and France have also kept their stance positive on the revised draft.
