The French Navy has stopped a large oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea which is suspected of illegally carrying Russian oil. The 58-year-old Indian captain running this ship has been arrested by the police and the ship has been stopped near Marseille. According to officials, the ship was sailing without the flag of any country, which is against the rules.
What is the whole matter?
French authorities had stopped a tanker named ‘Grinch’ on January 22. The ship had left Murmansk, Russia with oil and was using the flag of Comoros, which was later found to be fake. Investigation revealed that the ship could be part of the ‘Shadow Fleet’ that broke the sanctions imposed by Western countries. The ship is now moored in the Bay of Fos, near Marseille.
What is the charge against the Indian captain?
The captain of this ship is a 58 year old Indian citizen. According to French law, not flying the correct flag on a ship is considered a serious crime. The captain was taken into custody on 25 January. All the other crew members present on the ship are also Indians and they have been asked to stay on the ship for now.
Punishment and fine information
Strict action may be taken against the captain under Article L5223-2 of the French Transport Code. If the allegations are proved, the captain may be jailed for up to 1 year and may have to pay a fine of 1,50,000 Euros i.e. around Rs 1.3 crore. Apart from this, the ship can also be confiscated.
