34-year-old Zohran Mamdani of Indian origin was elected Mayor of New York City on Tuesday. Zohran Mamdani, son of famous Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Indian-origin Ugandan writer Mahmood Mamdani, has defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Party’s Curtis Sliwa.
This election was not just for the post of Mayor of New York, but was a big test for the clash of ideology and generation within the Democratic Party.
Mamdani won the NYC mayoral election, garnering 948,202 votes (50.6 percent), a turnout of 83 percent. He had been the leading candidate in the NYC mayoral election for several months and on Tuesday he defeated Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and politically veteran former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo contested the election as an independent candidate. He had the support of Trump. Cuomo received 776,547 votes (41.3 percent), while Sliwa received 137,030 votes.
The NYC Board of Elections said more than two million votes were cast for the first time since 1969, with 444,439 cast in Manhattan, followed by the Bronx (187,399), Brooklyn (571,857), Queens (421,176) and Staten Island (123,827).
Democrat Abigail Spanberger also won in Virginia and will now be the new governor here. She will become the first woman governor of the state.
By defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, he sent a clear message that moderate Democrats can still win the trust of voters. In New Jersey too, Democrat Mickey Sherrill won the governor’s election. Both replaced Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin.
