People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti visited the Iranian Cultural Center and Embassy in New Delhi. He expressed grief over the demise of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and paid tribute to him. During this, he said that the people of Kashmir are standing with Iran in this difficult time. Along with this, he also raised the issue of safety and return of 596 Kashmiri medical students stranded in Iran with the Iranian Ambassador.
About 596 Kashmiri students are stranded in Iran
The current situation in Iran is very bad and about 596 Kashmiri medical students are stranded there. Due to security reasons, many students have been evacuated from different universities and shifted to a safe shelter in the holy city of Qum.
Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary said in a statement on March 8 that the government is constantly monitoring the situation. Right now it is not possible to evacuate the students from there due to security reasons. But as soon as the situation becomes even a little favourable, the work of bringing them back will be started.
During her meeting with the Iranian Ambassador, Mehbooba Mufti demanded to ensure the early and safe return of these students. He also posted on social media platform
What is its impact in Kashmir?
The impact is also being seen in Kashmir after the death of Iran’s supreme leader in the attacks on 28 February 2026. After the news coming from Iran, the Shia community of Kashmir has protested at many places.
Due to this, security has been tightened in sensitive areas like Lal Chowk of Srinagar and the entire area has been kept on high alert. The people living there are very worried about their children stranded in Iran.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah are also in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the safety of students. The students stranded there have been given strict instructions to remain in safe places until further orders or information about the route being cleared comes from the Ministry of External Affairs.
