Recently a very serious incident has happened in Oman, which has increased the concern of the entire Gulf region. On March 1, a military attack was carried out on Oman’s Duqm Port and an oil tanker passing through there. This is the first time in history that such action has been witnessed directly on Omani soil. Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, in view of the seriousness of the situation, immediately spoke to the leaders of many countries and appealed to maintain peace.

Complete information about the attack on Duqm Port
According to official reports, two drones targeted structures at Duqm Port, injuring one employee. Apart from this, an oil tanker was also attacked near the coast of Oman, after which the crew of the ship had to be evacuated safely. The attack took place at a time when the talks between the US and Iran mediated by Oman were moving in the right direction.
Keeping in view the security after this incident, the US Embassy in Muscat immediately issued an order for its employees to “shelter-in-place”. Oman’s Foreign Ministry has also advised its citizens and people living there to stay away from areas where the danger may be high.
Strong message from Foreign Minister and Sultan
Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi has expressed deep displeasure over this attack. Giving a direct message to America on social media, he said in clear words, “I urge America not to get involved in this further, this is not your fight.” Sultan Haitham bin Tariq also strongly condemned the military action and asked all countries to respect each other’s borders.
The External Affairs Minister has also spoken on phone to the leaders of Jordan, Egypt and GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait) as well as officials of Britain and the European Union. Oman has demanded the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to convene an immediate meeting and implement an immediate ceasefire.
What is the advice for common people and migrants?
This increasing tension may affect the security and trade of the entire region. Security experts say that till now Oman was in the role of an impartial mediator, but this attack has made the situation quite sensitive. Indian expatriates and other foreign nationals living in Oman are advised to strictly follow the instructions of the local authorities.
Regional tensions may also impact flights and port operations, as seen with the closure of Iraq’s airspace and disruptions at other ports. Oman’s Foreign Ministry is continuously working to monitor and help its citizens stranded in high-risk areas.
