Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Monday that his country and Israel should talk to each other to resolve outstanding problems as the war has yielded no positive results.
Aoun’s comments came after US President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire agreement in the more than two-year war between Israel and militant group Hamas. The war between Israel and Hamas began when the Palestinian militant group attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.
“Lebanon has held talks with Israel in the past, brokered by the United States and the United Nations,” Aoun said, adding that these talks resulted in an agreement between the two countries on the maritime border in 2022.
He said, “When the war did not yield any concrete results, then what is the hindrance in repeating the same measures to resolve the incomplete issues.” He said that the atmosphere in West Asia is one of compromises and negotiations.
“The situation is moving towards dialogue to achieve peace and stability,” Aoun said. That’s why we say that a solution can be found through dialogue and negotiation.”
“We cannot remain outside the process going on in the region,” Aoun said during a meeting with a group of journalists in Lebanon.
A day after the war between Israel and Hamas began, the Lebanese group Hezbollah began attacking Israeli military posts. Hezbollah had carried out these attacks in support of Gaza and called it a ‘backup front’ for it.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continued for about 14 months, which ended after US mediation in November last year. However, the Lebanese organization had to face heavy losses in this. Many of his political and military commanders were killed in this conflict.
