US President Donald Trump said he would “welcome” skilled immigrants to the country who would “teach” American workers the technology of making complex products like chips and missiles.
Trump also admitted that on this issue he may have to face “a little criticism” from his supporters who support strict immigration restrictions.
Addressing the US-Saudi Arabia Investment Forum on Wednesday, Trump said that a large number of plants are being built in the US, many of which are “very complex” and will make a major contribution to the country’s economic growth. He said that because these plants will make highly complex products such as telephones, computers and missiles, companies will have to bring in skilled workers from abroad who can train American workers.
Trump said in the presence of Saudi Arabia’s ‘Crown Prince’ Mohammed bin Salman, “I may face some criticism … My people, who love me and who I love, often lean to the right, sometimes very much.”
The President said, “Companies will have to bring their people so that factories can start.” We want them to come and teach our people to make computer chips and other things… They will have to bring thousands of people and I will welcome them.”
American companies hire foreign high-skilled workers using H-1B and L1 visas. The Trump administration has been cracking down on illegal immigration and many of his supporters have also called for toughening up the H-1B visa system, saying it is being abused and leaving Americans unemployed.
