Tata Nexon ahead of Maruti Suzuki Dezire and Hyundai Creta in terms of sales in India last month
September 2025 saw a major turnaround in car sales figures, where Tata Motors took the market by storm with the record-breaking performance of the Nexon. The company’s continuous focus on expansion in both the electric and petrol-diesel (ICE) segments is now showing clear results. This compact SUV has emerged as the best-selling car in the country. A total of 22,573 units were sold, which is almost double the sales compared to September 2024.
In this way, there has been a tremendous increase of 97 percent in its sales on annual basis. Tata Motors has succeeded in attracting both conventional (ICE) and electric customers with the Nexon. The various variants, modern features and strong build quality of this SUV have made it extremely popular among the people. The spectacular success of Nexon has played an important role in increasing Tata’s overall market share from 11.4% to 15.8% in just one year.
Maruti Suzuki Dezire stood second in the list with 20,038 units, a growth of 85 percent on a year-on-year basis. Maruti remains the country’s largest carmaker, but its total sales have declined by 8.4 percent compared to last year.

Interestingly, despite Maruti having five models in the top 10, the company’s market share declined from 40.4 percent to 35.1 percent. At third place was Hyundai’s Creta, which sold 18,861 units, which is an increase of 19 percent compared to last year. This SUV continues to be the leader in the midsize SUV segment and remains Hyundai’s best-selling car in the domestic market.
Mahindra Scorpio range has secured the fourth position in the list with overall sales of 18,372 units. This figure represents a strong growth of 27% year-on-year. SUV maker Mahindra recently launched the updated 3-door Thar, Bolero and Bolero Neo, which could play a key role in further boosting sales in the festive season.
At number five, Tata Punch maintained its momentum with sales of 15,891 units, a growth of 16 percent year-on-year. Right behind it, Maruti’s Swift has sold 15,547 units, slightly less than last year’s 16,241 units. The top ten included Wagon R, FrontX, Baleno and Ertiga. The festive season and the tax benefits of GST 2.0 have brought down the prices of the models significantly, and this couldn’t have come at a better time.
