New Delhi, October 17 (IANS). The Parijat tree, also known as Harsingar or Night Jasmine, is truly a supernatural and divine tree. On hearing its name, the image of a beautiful, fragrant and mysterious tree emerges in the mind. Its special importance has been mentioned in Ayurveda and Puranas.
Parijaat was one of the fourteen gems that came out during the churning of the ocean. It is said that it was planted in Indra’s garden in heaven and only the nymph Urvashi had the right to touch it.
Parijat blooms at night and scatters its flowers on the ground in the morning. Its fragrance is so captivating that the atmosphere becomes completely fragrant. Its biggest identity is the white flowers and saffron stalk. This is the reason why this tree is also called Kalpavriksha, which is considered to fulfill the desires of the mind.
It is said that when Devarshi Narad presented Parijat flowers to Satyabhama, the wife of Lord Shri Krishna, she was so pleased that she insisted Shri Krishna to bring this tree to her garden. Indra rejected this demand, but Shri Krishna brought this tree from heaven riding on Garuda and planted it in Satyabhama’s garden. The interesting thing is that its flowers used to fall in Rukmini’s garden. This is the reason why many interesting stories related to this tree are prevalent.
The Parijat tree is 10 to 15 feet high in appearance and can live for thousands of years. Its biggest feature is that plucking its flowers is prohibited; only those flowers are used which fall on their own. This tree not only makes the environment fragrant but also removes negative energy.
Parijat is considered a medicinal tree in Ayurveda. Especially it is very effective in sciatica i.e. pain from waist to leg. Drinking the decoction made by boiling 10-15 fresh leaves in water in the morning and evening provides instant relief from pain. Besides, it also relieves joint pain, fever and body fatigue.
