New Delhi, October 29 (IANS). India has made historic achievements in green energy and the share of green energy in total electricity generation has increased to 51 percent, which includes electricity generated from renewable, hydro and nuclear plants. This information was given by the Ministry of Power on Wednesday.
The government informed that by September 30, 2025, the installed power generation capacity in the country has crossed 500 GW to 500.89 GW, in which the share of power generated from non-fossil fuels has increased to 256.09 GW or 51 percent.
At the same time, the share of electricity generated from fossil fuels like coal in the country’s total electricity production has come down to 244.80 GW or 49 percent. This shows that the government is rapidly increasing renewable energy production and shifting the country’s energy mix from fossil fuel-generated electricity to non-fossil fuel-generated electricity.
The share of solar power in the renewable energy segment has increased to 127.33 GW. At the same time, the contribution of wind power has increased to 53.12 GW.
The government said in the statement that in the first half (April-September period) of the financial year 2025-26, India’s non-fossil fuel capacity has increased by 28 GW and during this period, fossil fuel based capacity has increased by 5.1 GW, which shows that non-fossil fuel based power capacity is growing many times faster than fossil fuel based power in the country’s energy mix.
The statement further said that this is the first time that the capacity of renewable energy sources in the country has exceeded the capacity of fossil fuel based sources.
With this progress, India has achieved one of its key COP26 targets – achieving 50 per cent of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources – ahead of the 2030 deadline.
The statement said this success reflects India’s leadership in the clean energy transition, which has been achieved while keeping the power grid stable and reliable.
The government said in the statement that the focus on renewable energy is creating new employment opportunities in manufacturing, installation, maintenance and innovation, benefiting both rural and urban youth.
