Raising the problem of air pollution in Delhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for intervention.
Priyanka said that it is really a shocking experience to breathe after returning to Delhi from Wayanad in Kerala and then Bachhwara in Bihar.
Priyanka Gandhi wrote on ‘X’, “Now is the time for all of us to rise above our political interests and come together and take some concrete steps against this. The Central and State Governments should take immediate action. We all will support and cooperate with any such step which proves helpful in dealing with this terrible situation.”
Priyanka Gandhi said that Delhiites are forced to bear this poisonous air every year and they have no option. “People suffering from respiratory diseases, school-going children and the elderly all need immediate relief. We must take immediate action to tackle this pollution,” he said. He requested Prime Minister Modi, Environment Minister Yadav and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to take immediate steps.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), slow wind speed on Sunday resulted in less dispersion of pollutants and Delhi’s air quality remained in the “very poor” category.
The air quality index (AQI) of the capital increased from 303 on Saturday to 386 on Sunday morning.
Delhi’s Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) said the speed of winds coming from the north-west direction reduced to less than eight kilometers per hour during the evening and night, preventing the dispersion of pollutants.
According to CPCB’s Sameer app, ‘severe’ category air quality was recorded at 17 monitoring stations, of which Wazirpur had the highest AQI of 439. Besides, 20 other centers recorded air quality in ‘very poor’ category (above 300).
