So far, 27 people have been confirmed dead and about 1,000 injured in the powerful earthquake that occurred in the northern part of Afghanistan on Monday night. According to Tolo News, most of the damage occurred in Samangan province, where many houses completely collapsed.
🏚️ Scene of devastation
The earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.3, with its epicenter in Samangan province near Mazar-i-Sharif.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that so far 512 houses have been completely or partially destroyed.
Many families are taking shelter in school buildings, where there is a severe shortage of food and warm clothing.
Gulabuddin, a local resident, said, “My house completely collapsed. My pregnant daughter-in-law died and I myself got injured.”
Another victim, Naseem Gul, said, “We have no food, no space. Winter is near and children are falling ill.”
🚨 Relief and rescue
More than 960 people were injured in Samangan, Balkh, Baghlan and Kunduz provinces, according to government spokesman Sharafat Zaman Amarkhal.
Officials have warned that the humanitarian crisis will worsen in winter if immediate relief is not provided.
🇮🇳 India extended a helping hand
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that food items have been sent to Afghanistan for earthquake-hit families.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on
“India’s solidarity with Afghan people – Food items sent to earthquake affected families. India first responder.”
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to his Afghan counterpart Amir Khan Muttaki and expressed his condolences and assured all possible assistance.
