Kidneys are one of those organs of the body that work around the clock. They filter blood, water and toxins, remove wastes, make hormones, regulate blood pressure and play an important role in producing red blood cells and maintaining bone health.
Why does kidney disease become serious?
Kidneys not only do the work of filtration, but also help in many important functions of the body. People with kidney disease usually don’t notice symptoms until very late, such as kidney failure or high levels of protein in the urine. This is one reason why only 10% of people suffering from chronic kidney disease realize that they have the disease. In a report published on the website of the US National Kidney Foundation (NKF), Dr. Joseph Vassalotti, a medical officer there, said, “Although kidney disease often presents with a variety of symptoms, people often associate them with other diseases.” They do not realize that these symptoms may be kidney related. Although testing is important to find out if you have kidney disease, there are some symptoms to look out for as recognizing them can help keep yourself safe.
Why does kidney disease cause weakness?
When kidney function is severely weakened, a person may experience fatigue, weakness, and difficulty concentrating.
1- Accumulation of toxic substances in the blood
Accumulation of toxins and waste products in the blood can cause fatigue or weakness. It can last a long time and can also be serious.
2- Anemia
Healthy kidneys produce the hormone erythropoietin, which helps form red blood cells. Kidney failure can reduce production of this hormone, leading to anemia. When there is a deficiency of red blood cells, the supply of oxygen to the body organs and muscles is reduced, making the patient feel extremely tired and weak.
3- High blood pressure can also be a reason
Kidney disease is often associated with high blood pressure or other problems that can increase fatigue. Therefore, if you have a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney failure, or are above 60 years of age, you should get checked for kidney disease every year.
